Montgomery Schoolhouse was founded in the fall of 1971, the name and trademark taken from the old and long-vacant Montgomery, Vermont, schoolhouse that served as the first plant and offices. The company was well on its way to becoming America's leading producer of craft-quality wooden toys when the schoolhouse burned to the ground in July of 1973. Before long, things were back up and running in a rented barn and eventually in a new woodworking plant.
The hallmark of Montgomery Schoolhouse has always been the design, production and marketing of wooden toys with good old-fashioned quality. Eastern white pine and rock maple woods are used, both found in abundance in the region of Vermont. Initially, the toys had a clear finish applied to their simple and classic designs. In the 1980's, a more colorful, decorated product line with bright, primary colors was developed. In 2001, Montgomery Schoolhouse became a part of Maple Landmark Woodcraft. They plan to carry on the tradition of these great toys with a special emphasis of continued production in the state of Vermont.
