Mike Rainville, the founder of Maple Landmark Woodcraft, first began his woodworking hobby in his parent's basement during the 1970's using scraps from his grandfather's carpentry projects. Before long, friends and neighbors were asking Mike to make things and by 1979, he had his first wholesale account. After graduating from Clarkson University in 1984, Mike constructed a new woodshop for his now full-time business. The choice of "Maple Landmark" as the business name was a natural extension of the name Mike's family used for their maple sugaring business and dairy farm, Maple Landmark Homestead. His grandfather, Fletcher Brown, made maple syrup for over 65 years.

In 1987, Mike acquired the Troll's Toy Workshop of Barnet, Vermont. The company quickly grew and in 1996, they moved to Middlebury, Vermont, in order to accommodate increased production of their award-winning wooden toys. In 2001, Montgomery Schoolhouse, another long established Vermont producer of wooden toys, joined the Maple Landmark family. Currently, Maple Landmark Woodcraft employs about 30 people but remains a true family company. With four generations of their family working there, they are an American success story.
